Cast steel parts are widely used in heavy industry fields such as metallurgy, mining, construction machinery, and power. Their strength, toughness, and wear resistance are far superior to those of ordinary cast iron parts. However, the casting process of cast steel is highly challenging and sensitive, and defects such as pores, shrinkage cavities, cracks, slag inclusion, and deformation are prone to occur during production, which directly affect the quality and service life of the castings. To produce high-quality cast steel parts, it is necessary to strictly control all process details. This article thoroughly discusses the details that need to be paid attention to in the casting process of cast steel parts, helping manufacturers improve the qualification rate of finished products.

1. Strictly control the details of melting materials and temperature. The melting of molten steel is the core source of the quality of cast steel parts. Cast steel is extremely sensitive to temperature, and the conventional pouring temperature needs to be strictly controlled within the range of 1580℃ - 1650℃. If the temperature is too low, the fluidity of the molten steel is poor, and it is prone to insufficient pouring and cold segregation defects; if the temperature is too high, it will cause coarse grains and severe oxidation, leading to pores, hot cracks, and other problems. At the same time, the carbon, silicon, manganese and other alloy elements need to be accurately proportioned, and the content of harmful impurities such as sulfur and phosphorus needs to be strictly controlled to fundamentally avoid problems such as unqualified material quality and excessive brittleness of the castings.

2. Optimize the design of the pouring system to avoid forming defects. The pouring system is the key to the formation of molten steel. Most of the slag inclusion and shrinkage porosity problems of cast steel parts originate from unreasonable design. During process design, the principle of smooth filling should be followed, and the pouring holes, risers and chill iron should be reasonably set to ensure the uniform filling of the mold cavity by the molten steel and avoid turbulent flow of the molten steel. The size of the riser needs to match the thickness ratio of the casting to effectively compensate for the shrinkage of the molten steel during solidification and prevent shrinkage cavities and shrinkage porosity from appearing in the thick-walled parts of the casting. For cast steel parts with uneven thickness, the process structure needs to be optimized in advance to avoid cracking caused by stress concentration.

3. Strictly control the details of molding and sand mold process. The quality of the sand mold directly determines the appearance and internal quality of the cast steel parts. During production, the ratio of sand should be strictly controlled to ensure that the sand mold has sufficient strength, air permeability and refractoriness, avoiding the softening and detachment of the sand mold at high temperatures, and generating sand holes and sand sticking defects. At the same time, the cavity should be kept clean and free of debris, and the tightness of the molding should be uniform to avoid casting deformation and peeling. The drying of the sand mold needs to be fully carried out to avoid excessive moisture content in the sand and prevent the steel water from vaporizing when exposed to water vapor at high temperatures, causing large-area air holes in the casting.

4. Standardize the pouring operation and control the pouring rhythm. The details of manual pouring operation are the key to quality control. The pouring process should be smooth and continuous, without interruptions or fluctuations, to prevent the oxidation and entrainment of gas in the molten steel. For large cast steel parts, a layered pouring and delayed secondary pouring process should be adopted, while for small parts, a rapid and stable pouring should be carried out. At the same time, the pouring speed should be strictly controlled. A too fast pouring speed is prone to entrainment of slag and gas, while a too slow pouring speed is prone to cold segregation and insufficient pouring. The entire process should avoid process defects caused by human operation.

5. Manage the cooling and heat treatment processes well. Uneven cooling speed of cast steel parts is the main cause of cracks and deformation. After pouring, it is not allowed to open the box quickly and cool it urgently. The natural cooling time should be controlled according to the thickness of the casting, and the temperature should be slowly reduced to release internal stress. The subsequent heat treatment should be carried out in a standardized manner with normalizing and tempering processes, to refine the internal metal structure, eliminate casting internal stress, and improve the strength and toughness of the cast steel parts, avoiding cracking and deformation problems in the later use of the castings.

In summary, the core of the casting process of cast steel parts lies in controlling the temperature at the source, optimizing the flow channels, strictly controlling the sand mold, standardizing the pouring, and scientifically cooling. Firmly controlling these process details can effectively avoid various casting defects and significantly improve the quality and stability of cast steel parts, reducing production losses and rework costs for enterprises.
