Cast steel parts are widely used in heavy industry fields such as metallurgy, mining, construction machinery, and power equipment. The strength, toughness, and safety of these products directly affect the operational stability of the entire equipment. The processing of cast steel parts is complex, ranging from raw material shaping to finished product machining. Any failure to control a certain stage properly can lead to issues such as shrinkage cavities, cracks, size deviations, and surface defects, resulting in rework and scrap. To ensure stable quality of cast steel parts, it is necessary to strictly control the key links throughout the processing. This article details the core links that need to be focused on during the processing of cast steel parts, helping factories improve the processing qualification rate.
1. The raw material inspection stage: This is the initial control of the basic quality. Before processing, multiple aspects of inspection must be carried out. It is necessary to carefully check whether there are sand holes, air holes, slag inclusions, cracks, or sand sticking on the surface of the castings. At the same time, check whether the dimensions, allowances, and deformation of the raw materials are in line with the processing standards. For thick and large parts, as well as pressure-bearing parts, through flaw detection, hidden problems such as internal shrinkage and layering should be identified. Parts with serious defects should be dealt with in advance and not directly processed on the machine to avoid waste of machine processing costs and avoid batch quality problems at the source.
2. The heat treatment stage: This is an indispensable key process in the processing of cast steel parts, directly determining the hardness, toughness, and fatigue resistance of the product. After the casting is formed, there are casting stresses inside the material and uneven crystal grains. If no heat treatment is done, the later use is prone to deformation and fracture. Generally, through normalizing and tempering processes, the microstructure is refined, internal stress is eliminated, and the size of the castings is stabilized. During the processing, it is necessary to strictly control the heating temperature, holding time, and cooling speed to avoid problems such as excessive hardness, brittleness, and non-compliance with performance caused by improper heat treatment.
3. The grinding and finishing stage: This is to eliminate surface defect hazards. Cast steel parts with common problems such as burrs, sharp edges, residual sprues and risers, and oxide scales need to be properly ground and finished. Manual and equipment cooperation is needed to remove the remaining structures. The corners and transition positions of the castings are ground to ensure a smooth and flat surface. At the same time, stress concentration areas are cleaned to avoid sharp edges that may cause cracking under later force. During the grinding process, the force should be controlled evenly to prevent excessive grinding from causing insufficient wall thickness or dimensional deviations.
4. The precision machining stage: This is the core link to ensure the assembly accuracy of cast steel parts. It includes processes such as turning, milling, drilling, and grinding. Before processing, the workpiece must be aligned and calibrated to avoid excessive deviation in coaxiality and flatness caused by clamping errors. Considering the uneven hardness and vibration-prone characteristics of cast steel parts, the cutting parameters should be reasonably adjusted to reduce cutting stress and prevent deformation of the workpiece. For precision cast steel parts such as bearing seats, connection valve bodies, and gear accessories, the tolerance range must be strictly controlled to ensure the assembly fit and stable operation of the equipment in the future.
5. The final inspection and protection stage: After processing, a final inspection of the finished products should be carried out. Using calipers, micrometers, and flaw detection equipment, the size accuracy, surface quality, and internal performance are inspected to ensure there are no processing defects and that the parameters are met. Qualified products should be promptly treated for rust prevention, coated with rust-proof oil, and stored in a dry and flat area to avoid deformation, oxidation, and rusting due to knocks and impacts, ensuring the quality of the products upon leaving the factory.
In summary, the processing of cast steel parts requires controlling the five core links: raw material inspection, heat treatment, grinding and finishing, precision machining, and final protection. Through refined control throughout the process, defects can be effectively avoided, the accuracy and structural stability of cast steel parts can be improved, production costs can be reduced, and high-quality cast steel components can be provided for various industrial equipment.
